Data, Information, and Content

We are building on the existing Robben Island Museum site, so a significant amount of information available over there will be rendered in AR for more immersive experiences. The primary data will be existing narratives, including prisoner testimonies and oral histories. We will complement this extant data with modern-day perspectives of researchers and academics in relevant fields of history and anthropology, via audio/video interviews (Possible researchers and public figures include Fiona C. Ross, Francis B. Nyamnjoh, Athambile Masola, Camalita Naicker, and Committee members of the South African Society of Archivists. We will also add image data from the various sites across Robben Island Museum via camera setups (through devices such as the GoPro Max 2, and also via Creative Commons) for rendering them in AR environments using WebGL and WebXR. For the app, we will build on the Museum’s RIM Google App initiative, which is not an actual app as of now, but simply the web-based incorporation of Google StreetView data on the island.
